Gift 1: Big Bad Bow Toy
“One of the best gifts that comes to my mind is a toy that I got when I was probably around 9 years old. It was called the big bad bow. It was basically this purple crossbow that shot foam arrows. I remember that I put it on my Christmas list to Santa and I was absolutely over the moon when I saw it on Christmas morning! I spent the whole Christmas shooting targets with that bow and had competitions with my brother and sister. As an adult I realise that gift probably only cost around 20 quid but as a child I thought it was so expensive and high quality! I remember watching the adverts on TV and it looked so cool! At the time my brother and I were also really into army stuff, James Bond, Robin Hood… anything with weapons really! So that was a pretty awesome gift!”

Gift 2: iPad
“A gift that comes my mind is the iPad 2 that I was given by my parents at Christmas when I was 21. I guess the reason I remember this gift is because I got a lot of use out of it. I remember using it a lot on my travels in particular. I downloaded loads of movies and songs to it and I also recorded piles of videos from my trip in Australia on it so it was one of the most practical and handiest gifts I’ve ever been given. I also remember it well because it was the first iPad that I’d ever had; I’d only ever gotten a phone or a laptop before and this actually felt like more of a luxury because you kind of need your phone and your laptop for life and work but the iPad felt more for entertainment and leisure. I really don’t know how my dad afforded Christmas! He was definitely the best gift-giver though because he always got us some kind of device or something that was technological. All in all, I think like most people I loved the iPad because it was super handy on long bus journeys, flights, at the airport or even when you aren’t able to watch TV because your family are watching something else. To this day, it’s up-there with one of the best gifts for sure!”

Gift 3: Go Pro
“A memorable gift that comes to my mind that I really loved was the GoPro that I got from my parents for Christmas. I think the reason I love this gift so much is that it got me into videography. Previously I had never imagined that I would be able to film and edit decent videos and if it wasn’t for that GoPro maybe I wouldn’t have bothered, so I really appreciate it for that reason. And you know I remember I had traveled to a few countries and shared some pictures to my parents but the phone quality wasn’t great at the time so before I went on my next trip I guess my parents thought the GoPro would be perfect for capturing way better pictures and videos. And yeah I got a lot of use out of it. I took it to Vietnam and Colombia and I even used it for some friends’ weddings as well! I think the thing I like about it is that it is so compact and robust, it’s great for road trips and you can use it in the water as well. Some of my best memories are actually recorded using that GoPro so it’s very meaningful. And even though it is about seven years old, it still works well to this day!”

Gift 4: Toy Car
“One of the gifts that comes to my mind is the pedal cars that my parents got my brother and I for Christmas one year. I think we were probably around seven and five at the time so we were full of energy and always running around outside so it really was the perfect gift for a pair of little boys. And you know my granny lived really close on a farm where there was a lot of space to drive these cars. She had a big long lane that went downhill so you can imagine that my brother and I made good use of it! I just remember that we had those cars for years and years and we got so much use out of them. We used to organise races around the house, sometimes we timed each other, and we even created different types of races. For example, a sprint race where there were maybe only two laps and an endurance race where there were around 30 laps. And the cool thing about these cars is that because they were so durable, the next generation were able to use them. So for instance my uncle’s children actually were able to drive around in them as well! I think it was only about two or three years ago that we chucked them out so it just goes to show you how long a gift can last!”

Gift 5: Football Boots
“So a gift that comes to my mind is a pair of football boots that my dad got me for doing really well in my exams when I was probably around 13 or 14 years old. I was absolutely football mad when I was that age so getting me anything to do with football would have been a successful gift! Anyway these football boots were not just any old football boots. They were “Gold Nike Vapours”, which were incredibly expensive and I also had my name and number on them too! I think they came out to about 170 pounds which is mental for a pair of boots! Normally I would have gotten football boots for roughly 60 to 70 pounds, so this was a different level. Anyway, the sad thing is that they were stolen. I was playing a match one Saturday morning and I forgot my kit bag. I don’t think I’d ever done that before which makes it an even harder pill to swallow, but anyway we turned around after five minutes to head back and get them but they were already gone, someone had nicked them. We rang everyone we could to find out any information at all about them but with no luck. I reckon I had them only 2 or 3 months. So it’s safe to say that I didn’t get another expensive pair of boots ever again!”
