Contrast Clauses for IELTS Speaking

🧠 How can contrast Clauses improve your score?

✔️ Give balanced opinions
✔️ Sound more thoughtful and natural
✔️ Show control of complex grammar
✔️ Expand answers smoothly
✔️ Add nuance—a key feature of Band 7+

Let’s take a look at the main contrast clauses that are useful for IELTS Speaking!

1. Although / Even though

Use these to show contrast in one sentence.
Even though is stronger and more emphatic.

Structure

Although / Even though + sentence, sentence

✔ Shows ability to balance ideas
✔ Sounds natural in long-turn (Part 2) and opinion questions (Part 3)

2. Though

There are 2 main ways that though are commonly used in spoken conversational English.

✅ 1. At the end of a sentence (very common, very casual)

Adds a soft contrast. Think of it like “however“.
This is the most street way to use though.

“I like him. He’s kinda annoying though.”
“It was expensive though.”
“I might go though.”
“The food was good though.”

Tone: chill, light contradiction.

✅ 2. In the middle of a sentence

Still casual, but a bit more structured. Think of it like “but“.

“I liked the movie, though it was a little long.”
“We went out, though I wasn’t really in the mood.”

Note: Using “but” is the most common and natural coordinating conjunction, so absolutely use it too! E.g. “I liked the movie, but it was a little long.”
