Event 1: Festival Colombia
“So a memorable event that comes to my mind was the carnival festival that takes place in Colombia every year. It’s actually the second largest festival after Rio de Janeiro! It was an absolute blast, definitely one of the most unforgettable events that I’ve ever been to! I was really lucky actually because one of my housemates was from the city that hosts this festival and he kindly let us stay at this place. Not only is he a great host but he’s also a very fun person to show you around. Anyway we basically partied for three days straight. We dressed up in the most colourful clothing we had, drank copious amounts of rum and danced our socks off all day and all night! And I have to admit that I was a little bit apprehensive beforehand because I thought with the amount of alcohol that was on the go there would be some fights and things could get dangerous but thankfully there were no issues at all. Everyone was in a great mood and the vibes were so positive and carefree. I think it’s one of those moments in my life where I felt truly alive and lived completely in the moment. I’m a little bit older now and life is far more calm so I’m really happy that I didn’t miss out on partying while I was young. I have some incredible memories to look back on!”

Event 2: Vietnamese Wedding
“So a memorable event that comes to my mind is a wedding that I was invited to in Vietnam. This was a really random one. A Vietnamese girl who I met in Mexico during a summer camp invited me to her brother’s wedding! I can’t remember exactly how it all happened but she saw that I was in Vietnam and we got chatting and she thought it would be a cool experience for me to see what a Vietnamese wedding was like! I guess I was feeling spontaneous and curious so I agreed and it was honestly one of the most interesting experiences that I’ve ever had. It was really eye-opening to see the cultural difference but also to see how similar it is as well. What I remember the most is that everyone wanted to have a shot with me since I was a foreigner and I also remember the music was so different. It was proper party music during the whole ceremony! And instead of minister or priest there was a professional host. The other thing I remember is that the bride was crying quite a lot. But I found out this is quite typical at Vietnamese weddings. Overall I had a great time and everyone was so friendly to me and accommodating and I’m really glad I went! “

Event 3: Friend’s Stag Party
“An event that comes to my mind is a stag party that I went on for one of my childhood best friends in Hamburg. There was a group of around 10 of us and one of the reasons why I remember this trip so well is that I felt a little bit out of place because I didn’t know his friend group that well. He was much tighter with this group of guys and would go out with them and has been on holidays with them but him and I kind of drifted apart over time (we were still friends but we wouldn’t hang out as much, we hung out with different people and did things that we were more interested in). Anyway, like most stag parties it was very eventful of course. We went to some bars and clubs and drank a lot of alcohol. But I was happy that there were other activities as well. The best man organised paintball which was a lot of fun and it was actually my first time. And as well as that we went and played indoor football hungover which was kind of funny because we were all absolutely terrible! Oh yeah and we also did an escape room too! The whole trip was a massive success and I was chuffed to be a part of a special time for an old friend.”

Event 4: Football Tournament
“A memorable event which comes to my mind is a football tournament I went to when I was a kid. I played for my local football team and at the end of the season in the summer we headed over to Belgium to compete against other clubs from different countries around the world and it was one of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve ever had. I remember we had a really good team at the time and we were always competing for the league so we were all pretty confident that we would do well. And there was a great team spirit and camaraderie! Anyway I remember a couple of games that were very memorable. One of them was in the semi-final against a Scottish team where it was a really tough, physical match and I remember setting up an important goal. The most memorable moment of course was the final itself. We were up against a very tall team actually. I remember that the guy I was marking was over six foot, which was super tall for a 14 year old! Anyway, long story short one of our best players managed to score two absolute screamers and we won the final two nil. I just remember the emotion. I had never felt anything like that before. You don’t really know what to do with yourself. You feel like laughing and crying at the same time! I remember we all celebrated like mad that night and those good memories stayed with us for a long time and gave us a great sense of pride.”

Event 5: Brother’s wedding
“A memorable event which comes to my mind is my brother’s wedding. The reason it’s so memorable is that it was during the Covid-19 pandemic. My brother lived in New Zealand and the wedding was in New Zealand but no one was allowed to travel so the wedding was live streamed and we watched it from our sofa. It was the weirdest thing because you felt like you were watching a movie and it didn’t feel real. And I was the best man! Usually the best man makes a big speech in front of everyone but because of the circumstances I had to pre-record my speech and then watch myself on a big screen along with everyone else! It was the weirdest thing ever! The other strange thing about that day was that it was early in the morning because of the time difference between UK and New Zealand. We were all having breakfast while they were having dinner! We we’re drinking coffee while they were having wine! And also because we were at home we didn’t dress up in suits and dresses but instead just work comfortable clothing what sitting on the couch. So you can imagine it was kind of hard to get into the spirit of the wedding. All in all it was a happy and positive event but certainly one that I’ll never forget for how strange the circumstances were!”
