1) What does Roy tell the lads to stop doing?

2) What did Gary say Roy pulled off?

3) What does Roy think is affecting his driving?

  1. Have you ever been to Rome? If so, did you like it? If not, is it somewhere that’s on your bucket list?
  2. Have you ever rented a car or bike and taken in the sites when on vacation?
  3. Do you like driving or do you prefer to be a passenger? Why?
  4. Why is Rome a popular tourist destination?
  5. What’s your favourite thing about visiting a new place?
  6. Who out of the 4 players would you like to go sightseeing for the day?

Person 1: Could you think our seats can go forward a bit?

Person 2: They probably can, can’t they? This is what happened in Rome all those years ago — I was left in the back on the bench.

Person 1: Oh, I like that story. It’s true, yeah — you didn’t play, did you?

Person 2: No, I was on the bench.

Person 1: What are you doing?

Person 2: Seeing if I can pull it forward a bit.

Person 1: Oh my God, being in the back with him… What is going on here?

Person 2: Hang on, hang on. Move it forward. Push it forward.

Person 1: What? Push it forward? You’re pushing the whole car!

Person 3: It’s setting off!

Person 1: Oh my God — stop messing, will you? Idiot, put the brake on!

Person 2: It’s not even funny.

Person 3: Brake’s not on — it’s not funny. This cannot be safe.

Person 1: God, this is not right…

Person 2: What’s happened? Put the— Jesus!

Person 1: Alright, here we are. I’ve got the directions here, so we’re cool.

Person 3: Okay, look — we’ve got the directions to drive.

Person 1: I’ll try. I can drive.

Person 2: Right, here we go. This is the brake here, this the clutch—

Person 3: Of course it’s the clutch. That’s the clutch there.

Person 1: That’s the brake down there.

Person 2: Where’s the clutch?

Person 1: On the left — the clutch is there.

Person 3: Yeah, that’s what I was saying. You’re fine, honestly.

Person 1: You’re getting really annoying.

Person 2: Turn it on — let’s rock and roll, baby!

Person 3: This boy hasn’t had a manual car for a long, long time.

[A Few Moments Later]

Person 2: Have you tried to start it?

Person 1: Yes — what are you doing, pet?

(They flag someone down)

Local: Hello! How do you start this 1969 car?

Local 2: Turn the key, and then the small stick on the right — pull it up, then push the gas. Push gas!

Person 1: Right, it’s ready now?

Local: Yes — four gears, one reverse. Enjoy! Good luck!

Person 3: Great instructions, those. Only four gears.

Person 2: But Roy, if you’re not comfortable, you don’t have to do it.

Person 1: I’m fine.

[In the Car Again]

Person 2: Oh, Gary’s awake now, is he?

Person 3: Not big enough for him to fit in, though!

Person 2: Why aren’t you driving? You’re supposed to be driving — this is your city!

Person 3: This is where you became a team player — you lost your selfishness as a striker. You thought, I’m going to do a job for the team, am I right?

Person 2: (laughs) I like that.

(Laughter and music)

Person 1: Focus, Roy. Focus!

Person 2: I’m just worried I’ll go into reverse — my feet are too big, they’re hitting each other!

Person 3: Let’s pull over. I’ll do it.

Person 2: No, no — let’s get going smooth first. I just won’t be smooth. Look at my feet — too big for the pedals, these trainers are covering all of them!

Person 1: What’s that building over there? Looks unbelievable.

Person 3: Oh, that’s amazing — do I know it?

(Laughter)

Person 2: I love Gladiator.

Person 3: How would you train to be a gladiator? Just fight people, isn’t it?

Person 1: Yeah, just fighting.

Person 2: With what — swords?

Person 3: I think it’s absolutely stunning. That building must be over a thousand years old — some guy built that, on a hill! If that was in Manchester, you’d try to turn it into a hotel.

(Music playing)

Person 1: Oh, hold on — she wasn’t happy.

Person 3: Sorry! Sorry — English idiots!

Person 2: Go, Roy, go on — watch out! What’s he doing?

Person 3: He’s taking the piss!

Person 2: Good one, Roy — see him up there!

Person 1: Oh look — the Colosseum!

Person 3: I mean, look at that. They built that 2,000 years ago, without scaffolding!

Person 1: Oh my gosh.

Person 2: Don’t let them get in front of you, Roy — they’ll cut us off. Go hard!

Person 1: Excuse me — your leg!

Person 2: I can’t change gear, honestly.

Person 3: What are you doing?

Person 2: I’m trying to move my leg — that’s better. Get your arm off my back now!

Person 3: There are people behind us!

(Laughter and shouting)

Person 1: Come on — he’s having a go at your driving!

Person 3: Oh, this is better, look — he’s laughing now. Give him the finger!

(Laughter, applause)

Interviewer: How was it carrying Gary as a passenger?

Roy: Well, I’ve been doing it for years!

Lovely car — a classic. But I think he did a lot of damage to it when I wasn’t watching, so I felt sorry for the guy when I gave it back.
