Fluency refers to 1️⃣ Speaking smoothly without much hesitation, and also correcting yourself only rarely. 2️⃣ Coherence is the connection between sentences and ideas when you use link words and link expressions (✅ first of all, then, also, another factor is…but you know, on top of that, apart from that etc rather than too formal linkers ❌ furthermore, consequently, as a result, in conclusion etc).
This is about the vocabulary you use. 1️⃣ Precision/ Accuracy: E.g. ✅"the book was inspiring" rather than ❌"the book was good". 2️⃣ Range of vocabulary: E.g. ✅"We went to a restaurant that had a pretty cool atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food!" rather than ❌"We went to a restaurant which had a nice atmosphere, nice staff and nice food!" 3️⃣ Idiomatic vocabulary used naturally: ✅"I came across an interesting article" rather than ❌"I encountered an interesting article". Focus mostly on phrasal verbs but also occasionally using idiomatic terms E.g. ✅"I HIT the gym 3 times a week" or ✅"I'm HEADING to Rome this year for my vacation" or ✅"There are PILES OF cafes in the city centre" or ✅"My best MATE told me a good joke" or ✅"It took me a while to GET THE HANG OF IT".
This is about your grammar you use. 1️⃣ Precision/ Accuracy: E.g. Using past tense when talking about something that happened in the past. 2️⃣ Range of grammatical structures E.g. Relative clauses (✅"It was a sunny day, WHICH put everyone in a good mood"), Conditional sentences (✅IF sentences), Subordinating Conjunctions (✅"ALTHOUGH I was tired, I kept studying" or ✅"I love traveling BECAUSE it broadens my perspective." ), Comparative sentences E.g. ✅"This city is much bigger THAN my hometown.", Passive voice E.g ✅"A new shopping centre WAS BUILT in my neighbourhood."
Pronunciation involves: 1️⃣ Clear & Correct Sounds (Individual Words) ✅ Can you pronounce words correctly? ✅ Are you making errors that change the meaning? 🔹 Example Mistakes: ❌ Ship vs. Sheep (short vs. long vowel sound) ❌ Think vs. Sink (mixing "th" and "s" sounds) ❌ Veg-tuh-bl, NOT Veg-et-ah-bl 2️⃣ Word Stress (Which Part of the Word is Stronger?) ✅ Do you emphasize the right syllable in words? ✅ If you stress the wrong part, does it confuse meaning? 🔹 Example Mistakes: ❌ PHO-to-graph instead of pho-TO-graph ❌ re-CORD (verb) vs. RE-cord (noun) 3️⃣ Sentence Stress (Which Words are Important in a Sentence?) ✅ Do you stress the right words to show meaning? ✅ Can someone tell what’s important in your sentence? 🔹 Example: "I didn’t say SHE stole the money." (Someone else did.) "I didn’t SAY she stole the money." (I didn’t say it out loud.) 4️⃣ Connected Speech (Smooth & Natural Flow) ✅ Do you link words together like a native speaker? ✅ Or do you speak every word separately, like a robot? 🔹 Example Mistakes: ❌ "I want to eat" → /I want to eat/ (Too choppy) ✅ "I wanna eat" → /I wanna eat/ (Natural connection) 5️⃣ Intonation (Does Your Voice Go Up & Down Naturally?) ✅ Do you sound engaging or flat and robotic? ✅ Does your tone show emotions like excitement, doubt, or surprise? 🔹 Example: "Absolutely!" (Excited tone, voice goes up) "I honestly don’t think it’s a good idea…" (Doubtful tone, voice falls)
Calculated by adding each score and dividing by 4. For example: If... 1️⃣ Fluency & Coherence → 6 2️⃣ Grammar → 7 3️⃣ Vocabulary (Lexical Resource) → 8 4️⃣ Pronunciation → 7 Step 1: Add the Scores 6+7+8+7 = 28 Step 2: Divide by 4 (to find the average) 28÷4 = 7.0 Final Speaking Band Score: 🎯 7.0 How IELTS Rounding Works: If the average is .25, it is rounded up to .5 If the average is .75, it is rounded up to the next whole number. Otherwise, the score stays as is. 💡 Example: If the final score was 6.75, it would round up to 7.0. If it was 6.25, it would round up to 6.5. If the average is .25, it is rounded up to .5 If the average is .75, it is rounded up to the next whole number. Otherwise, the score stays as is.
